Musik in Granit

Programme Note

"MUSIC IN GRANITE – SIX MOMENTS OF A LANDSCAPE"

The title of the composition is a puzzle made up of various clues and conjures up different musical and non-musical aspects. Music in Granite describes a sound world of noises: granite as the pictorial departure point for a raw, granular and archaic sound environment. I was inspired in this by a quotation from Morton Feldmann, whose writing continues to absorb me. "(Noise) bores like granite into granite" – to see granite not only as a metaphor for sound but also to think of granite music. Another aspect has more to do with a particular landscape and is linked to my recollection of a certain place. I often spent my school holidays in a village in Portugal near the Spanish border. The landscape there is fi lled with huge, wonderful granite boulders. Their texture, composition, their abstract forms which evoked living forms in nature never ceased to fascinate me. There is something archaic and pure about it.
